Five must of Santiago in autumn

17/10/2018

Autumn is a great station to visit Santiago de Compostela. Without the agglomerations of summer, the city can be enjoyed calmly and offers, in addition, a cultural and entertainment program varied and aimed at all audiences. The season of the Real Fhilarmonía de Galicia begins, the many Compostela museums (Cidade da Cultura, Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea...) raise all kinds of activities, music festivals (CortaPega, Outono Códax Festival), cinema (Curtocircuito) and even puppets (Galicreques)... In the autumn there are also very popular celebrations in the Galician culture and, of course, you have to talk about good food: it's time for chestnuts, 'caldo galego' or succulent and strong 'cocido'. The agenda, you see, is full. For that reason, we have decided to help you with a selection of the appointments that we believe are essential.

1-Magosto, the chestnut festival

In autumn they return the smell of roasted chestnuts and paper cones to the streets of Santiago. The locomotives of all life are installed every afternoon in the historic center and you can find them at the entrance of the Nova and Porta Faxeira.

But there is also a traditional party in Galicia that you should not miss at this time: the 'magosto'. From the end of October to the middle of November, almost all the schools, neighborhood associations and neighborhoods of Compostela celebrate theirs. The latter are usually open parties to anyone who wants to get close and you can get tired of chestnuts, in some places accompanied by chorizo, in other chocolate ... sometimes with games and inflatables for children.

Guadalupe, Almáciga, Conxo, San Pedro are some of the places to which you can go freely. If you prefer a more sophisticated celebration, we remind you that the Cidade da Cultura celebrates its Magosto no Gaiás with a percussion workshop and a traditional music concert by Xosé Lois Romero and Aliboria on Saturday 27 October.

2-Samaín, the Galician Halloween

El Samaín is another of the great traditional festivals of autumn Galicia and, to simplify, we could say that it is the Celtic version of the Halloween. Pumpkin carving workshops or costume parties are some of the typical activities in which you can participate if you come to Santiago on the bridge of Todos los Santos. A delightfully scary daring.

3-Cineuropa, the great festival

Among all the festivals that you can enjoy in Santiago in the fall, if there is one that undoubtedly stands out for both history and resonance and that is Cineuropa. This November, the month in which it is celebrated, will be thirty-two years old. Gone are more than four thousand projected films, prizes that have brought Santiago to great professionals from the world of cinema or the mythical movie marathons.

4-Santiago(é)Tapas

If your thing is gastronomy, we propose you to enjoy it in small doses and with a lot of creativity. The contest that awards the best 'tapa' of the Compostela establishments exceeds this year its first decade of life by testing more than a hundred proposals in each edition. Between November 15 and December 2, you can taste them and vote for your favorites.

But if you are one of those who are overwhelmed by excess supply and prefer to go for sure, take note because you're going to like one of the biggest news of Santiago (é) Tapas of this 2018: on the bridge of December, between days 7 and 9, only ten finalist tapas will be offered, a number of the most affordable to try them all, do not you think? The price of each tapa will range between 1.5 and 3.5 euros and all include at least one product of denomination of origin or protected geographical indication of Galicia.

5-Pórtico da Gloria

And in this top five we believe that the Pórtico da Gloria can not be missing in color, that is, the result of the meticulous restoration work done on the great work of Mestre Mateo. More than 50,000 hours of work and an investment of 6.2 million allowed to discover the original polychromy of the work after almost a decade closed to the public.

No wonder, then, that there were more than 79,000 people who dared to make long queues to see it this past summer. Now, starting in December, admiring the Portico will be one of the options offered by the Cathedral in its program of paid visits, although up to 550 people can enter for free every week. We tell you in detail in this post.

How about? Is it true that Santiago de Compostela deserves a break this fall? You already know that we are waiting for you in our hotels, all of them charming establishments located in the historical center very close to the Cathedral. And remember that we have free breakfast 24 hours, free wi-fi and complimentary tablets.
