Santiago: streets and squares of cinema

05/09/2017

Santiago de Compostela could be described as a great film set if you look at the multiplicity of sequences or entire films that have been shot between its streets, which helped to grow the tourism sector of the Galician capital.

A great example of success beyond our borders is The Way by Martin Sheen. The story that narrates this film focuses on the Way of St. James realized by a father and his son. Although the images of the city can only be appreciated at the end of the film, it is spoken throughout Compostela as the final goal. Another film that has triumphed internationally, directed by Pedro Almodóvar, is The skin that I inhabit, with partial sequences shot in the streets of Santiago.

These two titles are the best known, but did you know that there are many more films filmed on Compostela? Here are some of them:

- Thirteen hits (2003) by Xavier Villaverde. The director used as stage some of the most emblematic places of the city as the squares of O Toural and Cervantes, the Rua Nova, the Galician Center of Contemporary Art, etc.

- The Promise (2004) by Héctor Carré. It was recorded in the city of Santiago itself and in the Pazos de Torrecedeira.

- Galatassaray-Dépor (2005) by Hannes Stöhr. The film tells four stories that occur in parallel in four different cities of which one is Compostela and features a pilgrim.

- Sinbad (2011) by Anton Dobao. It is an animated film filmed in the vicinity of Santiago and in the city itself. In it recreates the life of a fabulador, Sinbad, that makes participate to Sara, the daughter of a friend of 13 years, of its histories.

These are some of the films that chose the streets and squares of Santiago de Compostela as the stage for some of their sequences, but we are sure that you know some more, you tell us which one?
