Enjoy the route of the Sarela river in Santiago

22/04/2019

Santiago is much more than a cathedral. Its historic center is a World Heritage Site. But beyond, can boast a good number of green areas and natural landscapes. One of them is the river walk of the small river Sarela. The conditioned route covers about seven and a half kilometers from A Peregrina to Amañecida (Vidán) and can be done both together and by small sections, which go from bridge to bridge. You will also find fountains, laundries and old mills and tanneries.

Historically the banks of the Sarela have had a great economic and demographic importance for the city. Between the years 1790 and 1830, the numerous leather factories existing in the area made Santiago a benchmark in the sector and tanneries remained in operation until the middle of the last century. Some of them have been rehabilitated and we can find them converted into a residential complex (Carme de Abaixo) or the National Center for Training in Rehabilitation (Pontepedriña de Arriba), although we will also see them in ruins.

We will also be struck by the large number of laundries and washing stones! that we will find on our way, since it was this area north of the city that had the greatest activity of the washerwomen.

Apart from its historical and heritage interest, the Sarela route will allow us to enjoy the wilderness nature a few meters from the urban center and the monumental center.

The most well-known and visited section, which begins at the Carme de Abaixo, is located just ten minutes walk from the Praza do Obradoiro and you can reach it by going through one of the most beautiful streets of Santiago, Hortas.

The murmur of water, trees such as chestnuts, oaks, walnuts, birches or willows, bushes and fields will accompany us on the way, suitable for walking, running or cycling. The plan is also lent for solitary reflection or relaxation, romantic walk or activity with children or dogs.
