Lights, carols, nougat and, of course, in a typical Christmas can not miss the nativity scenes, births or cribs. These holidays, according to the Christian tradition, have their origin in the nativity of Jesus in the portal of Bethlehem. But, even if we are not religious, visiting cribs is an activity that adults and children like. Also, do not forget that some are true works of art for their historical, sculptural or artisanal value. Others call our attention for their spectacularity and others also for their beauty or creativity. We are going to tell you which cribs are a must in Santiago this Christmas 2018-2019:

1. Nativity Scene in San Fiz de Solovio. From December 1 to January 5.

The church of San Fiz de Solovio, next to the food market, hosts an artisanal birth of the compostelano José Antonio Uzal composed of more than 250 figures of baked clay and cloth that recreate scenes from the Old Testament. The nativity scene includes a river, pieces with movement and lights that simulate the passage from day to night. This year also incorporates as a novelty the effect of lightning and thunder. Do not forget that San Fiz is the oldest temple with roots in Santiago. The legend locates in this place the abode of Paio, the hermit who discovered the tomb of the Apostle. Now you can visit for free at Christmas thanks to the nativity scene. Oh, and it is less than five minutes walk from our Hotel Literario San Bieito.

2. Nativity Scene of the Cathedral. From the long weekend of the Immaculate.

Neapolitan style and large, its about 600 figures reproduce biblical episodes and also the daily life of the 1st century Palestine. Throughout the installation, located in the Praterías nave of the basilica, we can find passages like those of the Annunciation, the Birth, the Adoration of the Magi or the Flight into Egypt. The pieces, which began to be made in 2006, are made of wood and porexpan, coated with ceramic paste and plaster. They were painted with acrylics, watercolors and oils.
The nativity scene can be visited during the opening hours of the basilica. You will be only a few steps away if you stay at our Praza Quintana Hotel.

3. 'Belén Familiar de Conxo'. From December 8 to January 6

You have to go to the neighborhood of Conxo -an old town hall where as a curiosity we will tell you that Rosalía de Castro was born- to see the most popular nativity scene in Santiago, which has its origin in 1946. It was then that a neighbor from Santiago, Paco Otero, He began to gather the figures. For more than thirty years the tradition continues his son, who nowadays makes a montage that reaches 45 meters in different levels and presents about thirty scenes. It incorporates 1,750 light bulbs and a thousand figures, of which more than a hundred have movement.

To see it, you have to go to Ruela de Torrente 6-8. It is open every day from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm and also on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays in the morning between 11:00 and 1:00 p.m.

4. Nativity Scene of Playmobil. From December 10 to January 11

The shopping center Áreal Central shows this Christmas a nativity scene made exclusively with Playmobil figures. More than 500 dolls and about 10,000 different pieces recreate the city of Jerusalem and life in Palestine in the time of Jesus. We find buildings such as the Second Temple, the Antonia Tower or the Herods Palace and also characters performing the most varied trades. Among the figures have also been cast several discordant for visitors to find the kits. It is a solidarity initiative to support the Xoán XXIII Homeless People Shelter.

5. Citizen Nativity Scene of Praza do Obradoiro. From December 22 to January 7

Since 2015, Christmas arrives at Praza do Obradoiro with a Magic Forest of firs of different sizes full of lights in substitution of the classic nativity scene. The change did not please everyone, so a group of neighbors decided to continue with the tradition taking their own handmade birth to the emblematic square.

These Christmases are scheduled to open on December 22 and will present as new the figures of the Magi and a shepherd-pilgrim as a reminder of those people who, for different reasons, are forced to leave their home. Likewise, the nativity scene will be accompanied by a book in which visitors can write dedications, reflections and wishes for the new year. The Obradoiro is a must in Compostela, but also remember that you can approach at any time from our hotels because they are located in the historic center of the city.

Have you already decided which one or which ones are you going to visit? We will wait for you working so that after the walk you will enjoy a pleasant rest in Compostela Net Hotels.
