November, magosto time and chestnuts in Santiago

Since late October and throughout November Santiago will cradle lot of magostos, which impregnate the main squares of light Compostela. This ancient tradition is based on an evening crowned by fire and roasted chestnuts, which originally was intended to honor the good harvests. It is mainly celebrated in the home, where the fire that warmed the cold November nights invited to share stories and legends.

Today this celebration takes place in the main meeting points each neighborhood, where people take the opportunity to forge closer links between food, dancing and laughter. Besides chestnuts, it is common also the presence of grilled sausages, red wine and "queimada" (typical alcoholic beverage of Galician cuisine to which healing powers are conferred), as well as popular music and traditional dances.
